New study on recognising opportunities in the field of tension between knowledge and learning published in the Journal of Business Research

In the article “Opportunity recognition in the tension field of knowledge and learning: The case of converging industries”, Dr. Simon Ohlert and Prof. Dr. Stefanie Bröring from the Chair of Entrepreneurship and Innovative Business Models, together with Prof. Dr. Natalie Laibach (Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences) and Prof. Dr. Rainer Harms (University of Twente), investigate how knowledge and learning interact to recognise new opportunities. Using data from 107 corporate entrepreneurs from converging industries, they identified three types of entrepreneurs:

  • The ‘broad experienced adapter’: This type has a broad range of experience and can combine knowledge from different areas.
  • The ‘specific experienced adapter’: This type has in-depth knowledge in a specific area and can apply this knowledge in a targeted manner.
  • The ‘experimenter’: This type is willing to try out new approaches and learn from experiments in order to recognise and exploit opportunities.
