About our faculty

The Faculty of Management and Economics is committed to the ideal of unity between research and teaching and strives to meet high academic standards in both areas. The faculty consists of 27 chairs as well as numerous junior professorships and postdocs. It achieves excellent rankings, for example, according to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, we were ranked as the third most influential economics faculty in Germany. In teaching, we pursue an integrative approach that combines business administration and economics and is widely known as the “Bochum Model”. In the Bachelor’s degree we offer an undergraduate economics programme (BSc Management and Economics), while in the Master’s degree we offer specialised Master’s programmes (MSc Finance, Accounting, Auditing, Controlling and Taxation (FAACT), MSc Econometrics, MSc Economic Policy Consulting, MSc Sales Management) in addition to the MSc Management and Economics.

In general, you are free to choose from all modules offered by the
Faculty of Management and Economics. However, please ensure that the modules you select align with your existing knowledge and academic background. Typically, no prior registration is required — you can simply attend the

and Economics are listed in the course catalogue.
The module handbooks provide detailed descriptions of each module, including workload and any prerequisites.

The modules available in the current semester are listed in the timetablesA separate overview of the modules currently offered in English is available here.

Living in Bochum

Bochum is a lively university city with 370,000 inhabitants and is located in the heart of the Ruhr region. With five million inhabitants, the Ruhr region is one of the largest economic regions in Europe. Once dominated by coal mining, the service and education sectors have long since taken hold.

Bochum has many opportunities for green recreation in parks or at Lake Kemnader, for example. The numerous cycle paths between the cities of the Ruhr area offer the possibility to explore the Ruhr area by bike. There is the Bochum Bermuda3Eck, the largest pub district in the Ruhr area, with more than 75 pubs, bars and restaurants. For more information about Bochum and the Metropole Ruhr, please contact the International Office.

For those interested in culture and science, the Schauspielhaus Bochum and the German Mining Museum (one of the most important mining museums in the world) are definitely worth a visit. The theatres in Bochum provide the setting for evening-length entertainment. You can find a comprehensive overview of the cultural offerings of the Ruhr-Universität and the city of Bochum here.

Hochschulsport Bochum offers more than 150 sports courses in around 50 different sports. You can find more information about the courses and the registration system on the Hochschulsport Bochum homepage. For those who prefer to watch rather than participate, the Ruhr region also offers excellent opportunities. It is home to many traditional German football clubs such as VfL Bochum, Borussia Dortmund, Schalke 04, MSV Duisburg and Rot-Weiß Essen.
