Über das Projekt
Since 1990, there have been considerable efforts to reduce absolute poverty in most developing countries. However, especially in Sub-Sahara Africa, progress has been slow. Literature shows that the academic debate on the determinants of poverty reduction takes place in disciplinary silos, where approaches that work well for high-income economies but ignore structural differences between high-income and developing countries are applied and deliver ambiguous results. ADAPTED will address this apparent research gap by developing high-level training for early-stage researchers, aiming to avoid the existing silos, integrate developing country realities into poverty reduction approaches and bridge the attested knowledge gaps.
The project’s aim is to
- validate pathways towards poverty eradication,
- analyse interactions between poverty reduction and other policy areas and
- contribute to optimise the impact of poverty reduction policies.
The European Joint Doctorate (EJD) ADAPTED is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network project funded by the European Union under the Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. ADAPTED is a consortium of six European Universities, four important internationally active European development organisations and think tanks and six African partner universities. ADAPTED will deliver high-level training to high achieving early stage researchers (ESRs) to bridge the existing knowledge gap in understanding poverty dynamics and by equipping the ESRs with a unique skills portfolio that is equally attractive for research institutions, development organisations and internationally active firms.
Four out of the 15 ESRs are first or second supervised by Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Löwenstein:
Muhammad Saleh (ESR 1): The Effect of Foreign Direct Investment and Official Development Assistance on Job Creation and Poverty Reduction

- First supervisor: Prof. Dr. Rémi Bazillier (Centre d’Economie de la Sorbonne University Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne (UP1), Centre National de Recherche Scientifique, France)
